Saturdays are my favorite days when I am in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Today was a two-fer with the Transylvania County Farmers Market http://transylvaniafarmersmarket.com/news-events/and volunteering at the Rice Street Community Garden.
Rice Street Community Garden
I didn’t get a lot of pictures of the garden because I was so busy shoveling fresh dirt into the beds so that the fall garden could be planted. There was a great group of people planting and pulling weeds and just enjoying all that free vitamin D. But here I am saying goodbye to the zinnias! I will be writing all about the Community Garden soon as they are doing great work and providing fresh produce to Bread of Life http://www.breadoflifetc.org/home0.aspx and Sharing House http://sharinghouse.org/
Kudos to the two linchpins of the community garden effort Bill and Norah! Take a bow.
The Transylvania County Farmers Market
The Farmers Market is always a treat and there was even live music!
I want to give a shout out to a few of my favorite local businesses that come to the market. The kind people at Calee’s Coops https://www.facebook.com/pages/Calees-Coops/237623736375831 have been very helpful to my Whole3o eating plan (more about that in another post!). Since I was able to order 25 lb. of their delicious pork sausage–they made it with no sugar. Awesomeness–thanks Michael and Casey!
Who doesn’t love mushrooms? OK, my daughter… but if you do.. Deep Woods Mushrooms has some beautiful nutrient dense mushrooms and the added bonus is that Greg Carter doesn’t just sell them he is a bonafide guru! He is always ready to give advice and he has great workshops on how to grow your own. See him at the market and check out his informative website: http://deepwoodsmushrooms.net/
Good news for busy people who still want to eat just real local food: Pitch Pine Farm will be having a Fall CSA running from August 27th to November 12th. There will be a convenient weekly pickup at Food Matters in Brevard. For more info: pitchpineorganicfarm.com
Last but not least by a long shot is Jayne Field, The Kitchen Fairy. Omigosh, what a great idea she has! Personal Chef Services, busy guys and gals–we are all for it! brevardkitchenfairy.com for all the latest and greatest.
That’s just a few of the great local businesses at the market. Just say no to agribusiness and remember It’s Got to be NC!
